Even though staying in Copacabana sounded quite attractive, going to a doctor in a small town didn’t. As soon as we got off the boat from Isla del Sol, we booked a bus going that very evening to La Paz where our guidebook assured us we could find an English speaking doctor. However, before we got on the bus, I had about three seconds to sneak a phone call to my gynecologist (and my mother’s best friend) in Israel, who gave me some amusing and quite logical advice: “Drink a lot of water,” she said, “and jump.” “Jump?” “Yes, jump. If this is indeed a kidney stone it might be lodged somewhere down the line and needs to be shaken loose so you could pass it.”
The bus ride to La Paz took about four hours that I went through rather well probably due to the antibiotic the Italian couple gave me. In La Paz we once again didn’t waste any time. We got ourselves a hostel room and took a cab to see the doctor from the book. Jurgen was a big help that whole evening; he went looking for a hostel with us and even carried my backpack. He even made sure we got into a cab OK and our driver knew exactly were we needed to go. Very nice guy. From there on, my condition only improved. We arrived to Clinic Boston (pleasant coincidence) and were very warmly received by Dr. Ebert Orellana Jordan who ran some tests, prescribed some antibiotics and sent us on our way. The whole experience cost us about $40 and to say the least was the most pleasant doctor visit I had in any country.
