Back in the USofA
January 18th, 2006
We spent a couple of days in Lima without an incident and even visited a Russian speaking doctor that was recommended to us in Miami on the day before we left the US regarding a small pre-trip medical problem and a more recent one. Tests have shown that everything is fine, so after a few days of shopping for presents we boarded the plane back to Miami.
The flight would be like any other if it wasn’t for a strange guy in a trench-coat and cowboy hat. We first saw him on our flight from Lima to Caracas, where we were changing planes. As it turned out, he was also continuing on to Miami, and as soon as we approached the gate to board the next flighy, he stroke up a conversation with us. Immediately, without any provacation, he was telling us about hundreds of people he shot while in service in the first Gulf war. As it turned he was an ex-military, who has completely changed his ways since then, turned from mercenary to missionary, and settled in Peru after falling in love with a Peruvian woman. He was going back to the US to raise money for his mission. However, he must still be suffering from PTSD, as the memories of people he killed are still haunting him, and he needs to constantly medicate himself with valium.
When we boarded the plane, this Captain America was sitting across from aisle from us. He must have just taken his valium, as he seemed much calmer now and even dozed off for some time. However, when he woke up and found we still have another hour of flying left, he got really impatient. He pulled out his pack of cigarettes, put one in his mouth, and started walking up and down the aisle pretending he was smoking it. He would stop periodically, take the cig out of his mouth, and loudly announce to whoever was next to him: “Lucky Strike! The most satisfying cigarette ever! I get no bigger satisfaction than from smoking a fresh Lucky Strike!” And finally, when a flight attendant tried to confront him saying that smoking is not permitted, he quickly retorted, “Do you see any smoke?”
