Getting Robbed but Staying Happy in San Cristobal

August 20th, 2007

A quick stop in Sumidero Canyon which was not that impressive even if there was no garbage floating in it, and a night in Tehuantepec, where I dared not take pictures of the locals and instead just went around the market to snap a shot of their colorful clothing which is still worn here every day, and we were in San Cristobal.

What a town, what a vibe! San Cristobal turned out to be one of those places people come to and lose track of time. It’s full of sights, bohemian, and spiritual, though some people choose to get the “spiritual” by getting high on MJ every day and then are as mellow and “spiritual” as you can get. Overall, it’s just a great place to stop and regroup.

We were suddenly happy the moment when we got here. It might have been the backpacker filled hostel, or the communal kitchen that set the mod, but we were just simply at ease. Even the bed-bugs that viciously attacked Shurik’s back, (consequently caught and executed for it), nor us finding out in the morning that GreenGo was broken into, spoiled the mood. We did have to spend a whole day looking for a place to replace the little window the robbers broke, which turned out to be quite a challenge on a Sunday when pretty much everything is closed, but it was really our own fault for forgetting to take the radio faceplate off. On the bright side, the radio itself was still there. You could see a dent in dashboard where the screwdriver went to pry it out, but they were unsuccessful. Funny that the special metal “keys” needed for taking out the radio, were in the glove compartment together with goodies like the Leatherman and an LED headlight. It was open, and obviously gone through, but the only thing missing was my stapler. They must have been spooked by somebody, or didn’t even bother climbing into the car through the front door window which they were gracious enough not to break, but roll down. Opening the door proved just as confusing as we planned it to be in such a situation. We installed simple slide bolt latches on the inside of both front doors. If you don’t know they’re there, it does make sense to give up when an unlocked door does not open.

We spent our days here mellowing out in the company of other travelers, mainly discussing life and routes we were about to undertake, uploading pictures and strolling around town for interesting finds.

Finishing our stay in San Cristobal with dancing to Reggae in a local club.
