Серенгети | Serengeti

Серенгети наверное самый известный парк Африки, если не во всём мире, а Большая Миграция что проходит через него, стала сюжетом несчётного количества фильмов. В это время года большинство гну и зебр ещё пасутся далеко на юге Серенгети, но даже сейчас нам встречались огромные, растянувшиеся цепочкой до горизонта, стада двигающиеся на северо-запад. Но больше всего нас поразила не бескрайняя саванна Серенгети, а прерывающие её скалистые холмики-kopje. Вокруг этих живописных каменных “оазисов”, можно найти множество живности от греющихся на солнышке львов и змей до наслаждающихся закатом павианов. А в тени окружающих их акаций скрываются леопарды.

Ну и для стильного завершения сбора данных для путеводителя, компания, которая организует полёты на воздушных шарах, предложила нам прокатиться над Серенгети. К сожалению, из шестнадцати мест в корзине, пятнадцать были уже забронированы. Поскольку в прошлый раз над водопадами Виктория на вертолете летала я, теперь была очередь Шурика. Но меня тоже не заставили скучать. Следующим утром я гналась за медленно плывущим над саванной воздушным шаром на джипе, и снимала его в лучах восходящего солнца на фото и видео.

Serengeti is probably the best known national park in Africa if not in the whole world, and the Great Migration that goes through it is the subject of countless documentaries. Unfortunately, this time of year, most of the wildebeests and zebras are spread out across the southernmost parts of the Serengeti plains, grazing peacefully and not moving much. However, some of them were already on the move, and we’ve met some huge herds, throngs of wildebeest stretching all the way to the horizon. But it wasn’t those herds that impressed us the most but rather picturesque kopjes, rocky outcroppings interrupting the endless savanna. Like an oasis in a desert, kopjes attract all sorts of wildlife from lions and snakes sunbathing on the rocks to baboons, contemplating the sunset. And the shady acacias surrounding them are favorite leopard haunts.

And to finish off our guidebook research in style, we got a chance to fly above Serengeti in a hot air balloon. Unfortunately, out of 16 places, 15 were booked. Since I got to take a heli ride above Victoria Falls, this time it was Shurik’s turn. I still had lots of fun chasing after balloon in a jeep, takings stills and video as it glided above the plains into the rising sun.

Нгоронгоро Кратер | Ngorongoro Crater

Нгоронгоро это одно из тех волшебных названий как Лабрадор, Занзибар, Тимбукту и т.д. которое кажется одновременно знакомым и мистическим. При этом большинство слабо представляют что прячется за именем. Нгоронгоро это огромный вулканический “кратер”, вернее кальдера. Высокие почти отвесные стены создали маленькую почти закрытую экосистему – своего рода естественный зоопарк. На плоском дне кальдеры обитают десятки тысяч копытных, слоны, носороги, львы, гиены, гепарды и леопарды, и много чего ещё. Кроме жирафов – для них там недостаточно высоких деревьев. Концентрация животных просто поражает, всего за несколько часов на дне Нгоронгоро можно увидеть больше чем в других местах за несколько дней. Но, к сожалению, самое часто попадающееся на глаза млекопитающее, это человек.


Ngorongoro is one of those magical names like Zanazibar and Timbouctou that everyone heard. Though the names sound familiar and mystical at the same time, few people actually know what they represent. Ngorongoro is a huge volcanic “crater” or rather a caldera. It tall nearly vertical walls create an all but closed ecosystem – a natural zoo of sorts. The flat bottom of the caldera is home to tens of thousands of antelopes, elephants, rhinos, lions, hyenas, leopards and cheetahs, and much much more. Except for giraffes –
there are not enough tall trees for them down there. The concentration of wildlife is simply mind blowing, in few short hours on the bottom of Ngorongoro Crater one can see more than in several days in most other places. Unfortunately, one mammal that is seen most often is Homo sapiens.

Озеро Маньяра | Lake Manyara

Озеро Маньяра известно фламинго и львами – львы тут любят лазить по деревьям, что они редко делают в других местах. Проездив весь день по парку, древесных львов мы так и не нашли, и уже в сумерках отправились в кемпинг. Пересекая устье сухой реки, мы наткнулись на одинокую львицу прямо на дороге. Она свернула в устье и направилась в сторону подозрительно на неё посматривающего жирафа. Мы продолжили по дороге и через пару сотен метров свернули в кемпинг который оказался на берегу той самой реки. С берега был виден жираф, но львица где-то спряталась. Не знаю как львица, но мы были голодны, поэтому мы быстро поставили палатку и стали готовить ужин, периодически проверяя русло фонариками на предмет незваных гостей. Утром мы уже не помнили о львице, хотя та могла легко прятаться неподалеку, а нас, у палатки, уже ждали новые друзья.

Lake Manyara is famous for the zillions of flamingos that gather there. But there’s something else quite special about that national park – its tree-climbing lions. Lions can climb trees, but they are not nearly as good of climbers as leopards, so they rarely do. Nonetheless, in this wooded national park they are often seen on trees, so we’ve spent an entire day driving around looking for them. Having found nothing, we headed towards the campsite as it was getting dark. As we were crossing a dry riverbed, we nearly ran over a single lioness standing right on the road. She left the road, and headed along the riverbed towards a giraffe that was standing nearby cautiously looking around. As it was too dark for photos, we kept going and a few hundred meters later pulled into the campsite, which turned out to be on the bank of that same river. We could see the giraffe, but the lioness had hidden somewhere. Don’t know how hungry was the lioness, but we were hungry like lions, so we quickly set up the tent and started cooking dinner periodically checking the riverbed with a flashlight, for uninvited guests. Next morning, we the lioness was completely out of our mind, even though she could still could have been hiding nearby, and turned our attention to some friends we turned out to have waiting for us around the tent.

Тарангире | Tarangire

Последним номером нашей программы, на этот месяц, было посещение наиболее известных национальных парков Танзании, расположенных на севере страны.

Парк Тарангире, в первую очередь, известен огромными стадами слонов. Парк растянулся вдоль одноименной реки, которая не пересыхает даже во время сухого сезона, когда тут проходит Большая Миграция в миниатюре. С августа по ноябрь, большинство гну и зебр в соседнем Серенгети уходят в кенийскую Масаи Мара. Тогда же, большие стада зебр и гну мигрируют в Тарангире с окрестных равнин. Но сейчас не август, и нам пришлось наслаждаться лишь слонами на фоне самых красивых африканских пейзажей из увиденных нами за долгое время. Берега реки усеяны большими баобабами и разлапистыми зонтичными акациями. Единственное, что портит красивый африканский пейзаж, это мухи цеце. Их мы не встречали ещё с Замбии, больше года назад. Конечно, сонная болезнь практически вымерла, но кусаются они очень больно.

The only thing left to conclude out expedition was to visit the world-famous Tanzanian national parks stretching along the country’s northern border.

Tarangire NP, situated on the shores of river of the same name, is most known for its huge herds of elephants. But the park is especially interesting at the height of the dry season in August to November, when it becomes the site of a mini Great Migration. As millions of wildebeest and zebras leave Serengeti for Kenyan Masaai Mara, wildebeest and zebras come to Tarangire from the surrounding plains looking for water as the river stays flowing even during the dry season. Since it wasn’t august yet, we had to content ourselves with just elephants and some of the best African scenery we’ve seen in a long while. The shore of Tarangire river are covered with big baobabs and acacias. The only thing that ruined out enjoyment, were tsetse flies. We haven’t seen those for over year now since we’ve left Zambia. Even though sleeping sickness is no longer a concern, their bites hurt like hell.
